You have probably heard medicine called a “healing art” or referred to as the “art and science of medicine.”  Some describe it as an “art” based on science. Science and scientific method deal with natural laws and function. How it is applied can be called an “art”.

I like to refer to the practice of intuition in its various forms as the “intuitive arts”.  It is a phrase that encompasses the many forms in which intuition is used.  I envision that perhaps one day we may call it the “intuitive arts and sciences”, because, like the healing arts, there is scientific evidence of its existence and accuracy.

Definitions

I have compiled a list of types and definitions of various faculties and forms of the intuitive arts:

The “clairs-” are abilities that use the inner senses. The prefix, clair-, means clear.

Clairvoyance – (clear seeing) The ability to see images as messages, usually with inner vision, in the “mind’s eye” and perceived without the aid of the physical eyes.

Clairaudience – (clear hearing) The ability to hear messages in the form of sounds or words with the inner ear as mental tones and without the aid of the physical ear.

Claircognizance – (clear thinking) The ability to simply “know” something without receiving the information from outside sources.

Clairsentience – (clear-feeling) The ability to “feel” information without receiving the information from outer stimuli.

Clairtangency (also known as Psychometry) – (clear-touching) The ability to know information about the object’s owner and/or its history by touching and handling an object. The information comes through the handling of the object and not from any outside source.

Clairscent or Clairnosmia – (clear smelling) A fragrance/odor is smelled without a food or substance present that is producing the scent and without the aid of the physical ability to smell.

Clairgustance – (clear tasting) To taste a substance without putting anything on the tongue or in the mouth.

Clairempathy – (clear emotion) To sense or feel within the attitude, emotion or ailment of another person. An empath feels what another is feeling.

Energy healing & Distance healing – using methods of healing that involve the human energy system to effect improvement or cure by non-traditional medical means.

Mediumship – This is the ability to communicate with those on the other side. It is claimed that this ability confirms the survival of consciousness after physical death.

Precognition – Knowing that a particular thing is going to happen in the future without being informed of it in advance and without self-observation prior to the event that would lead one to conclude that it will happen in the future.

Psychokinesis – Mind matter interactions. For example, when a person makes an object move through mental or psychic effort without touching it or manipulating it physically (e.g., causing the object to slide or using magnets).

Supporting Evidence

There have been scientific studies that have shown evidence of telepathy, mediumship, remote viewing, distance healing, and extra-sensory perception. This article lists 13 major universities that have hosted studies that looked into the paranormal with varying results, among them Princeton and the University of Virginia. Dr. Gary E. Schwartz*, Director of the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health at the University of Arizona is well known today for conducting studies in this area. There are others as well including Dr. Julie Beischel**, who now continues to conduct studies in mediumship at the Windbridge Institute for Applied Research in Human Potential.

In related areas, some are investigating such activity as hauntings, apparition phenomena, and the survival of consciousness after physical death using devices that record electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and using instruments for instrumental transcommunication (ITC).

Of course, there is healthy skepticism and on the far end of the curve, those who cannot abide research into anything that is unknown to them or seems strange, deeming it a waste of time and money.

These parapsychological topics which include the intuitive arts help us to look more deeply, beyond appearances to explore the mystery of non-local consciousness, hidden potentials within us, our invisible connections to one another, experimenter effects, and unexplained healings that people often term, “miracles”.

*GARY E. SCHWARTZ, Ph.D., Director of the VERITAS Research Program, is a professor of Psychology, Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Surgery at the University of Arizona and director of its Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health and its Center for Frontier Medicine in Biofield Science. After receiving his doctorate from Harvard University, he served as a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Yale University, director of the Yale Psychophysiology Center, and co-director of the Yale Behavioral Medicine Clinic. **JULIE BEISCHEL, PhD, Co-Director of the VERITAS Research Program, received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology with a minor in Microbiology and Immunology/Immunopathology from the University of Arizona. Dr. Beischel was the first ever recipient of the William James Post-doctoral Fellowship in Mediumship and Survival Research and, as of January of 2008, will continue performing mediumship and survival research at the Windbridge Institute for Applied Research in Human Potential.
